Public speaking initially started with the famous Greek philosopher Aristotle back in the 300s BC. Aristotle discovered that in order to rally the citizens into conformity, one needed to persuade people. This is what he called rhetoric, and it's defined as the capacity to persuade people, and he broke it down into three strategies:
Ethos
Logos
Pathos
Ethos is used when the source is credible and the speaker can show authority over the subject matter(an adminstrator, ploitical leader etc).
Logos is used when there are facts to support the argument requiring that the audience use logic and deduction to decide on the strengths of the speaker's argument(reports, stats etc).
pathos is used for emotional appeals to gain audience acceptance.(being warm, calling them associates) .
In more modern times we Explore three types of public speaking in everyday life:
 informative:  Giving out information ,

persuasive:Appealing to their logic and trying to sell across our point

entertaining:It is more informal kind of public speaking.
So public speaking or evolution of importance of public speaking is not a recent trend,It was in existence since time immemorial .
A speech should have the following merits

Introduction: How effective is the introduction? Does it grab attention?
Content: Is the content well organised? Are the ideas generated suitable to the purpose of the speech? (e.g. expository, narrative, persuasive etc.). Has sufficient library research been carried out?
Voice Quality: Is the voice loud and clear? Are aspects of speech delivery well executed? (aspects such as pitch, rate, pace and pronunciation)
Non-verbal Communication: Are gestures used suitable? Does body language of speaker help/hinder speech delivery?
Eye Contact: Does speaker look at audience when speaking?
Visual Aids: What types of visual aids are used? Are visual aids well prepared and are they suitable?
Conclusion: Is the conclusion effective? What types of strategies are used? (summarising main points, using a quotation, relating an anecdote, etc.). Is the conclusion interesting?

Effective public speaking boils down to one thing effective communication.
‪#‎Immersiontherapy‬ – to feel the fear and do it anyway – is by far the best way to overcome something.
Given enough exposure to what you fear, it will eventually have less power over you.
You get used to it.
That doesn’t make it an easy process to start, but at least you know the path
